TX Connect - You Too

  • Despite the locally focused name, the first release from Adelaide Sound Works comes not from an Australian but Dallas producer TX Connect, who was previously heard on L.I.E.S. and Dixon Avenue Basement Jams. His first full-fledged solo EP features the same barreling hardware house that made his reputation in 2013, but don't let that fool you—his tracks are raw rather than lo-fi. "You Too" is the lightest thing TX Connect has put to record yet, channeling jaunty Chicago styles through his own taut and muscular perspective. Layered organ melodies and a brass synth make up the track's core, like a woozy MK Dub, but the patient rhythm has a slight off-kilter quality that makes the skipping hat/snare combo utterly irresistible. It also provides focus during the track's relatively straightforward nine minutes, before it finally explodes into a flurry of repetition at the end. Next to "You Too," "Trashed" is dark psychedelia, its ominous chords punctuated by a harsh rhythm section where drums distort harshly on impact. "Hammock On Hurricane Hill," meanwhile, delves into TX's beloved acid realm, but it's cheerier than usual. Never one for rote clichés, his tune's unusual treble-bass dynamics and trippy panning effects turn it into another one of the ever-shifting journeys he's becoming known for.
