Obtane & Nax_Acid - Eleusinian Mysteries

  • Eleusinian Mysteries is the second record on Aconito's vinyl-only Seed series, which draws inspiration from the myth of Hercules. This time around, label boss Andrea Ruffino, AKA Nax_Acid, has re-enlisted fellow Italian Francesco Baudazzi, AKA Obtane, who's already made a couple of appearances on Aconito—and who's probably best known as one of the minds behind the recently-shuttered Zooloft label. Here, his two originals are far enough apart from each other stylistically to keep things interesting. "Tanaerum" is the more straightforward track, though it steadily traverses peaks and valleys carved out by a buzzing lead and cascades of electronic noise. While it's not as aggressive, "Cerberus Swamp" should be the more potent DJ tool: at its core are broken-beat drums and a slippery synth riff, which together give a tumbling sense of forward propulsion. Ruffino's "Hades Way" remix of "Cerberus Swamp" completes the release. Its complex path is underpinned by a more subdued pattern of 4/4 kicks, and features the sort of detailed sound design and dramatic drops that have marked much of his solo work.
