- It's shaping up to be a breakthrough year for vocalist and instrumentalist Robbie Redway. Having teamed up with Midland to form AKASE, the pair has spent the first few weeks of 2014 holed up in Ewan Pearson's Berlin studio to lay down tracks for their debut album. Before then, Redway was handed his wings by MadTech and put in the care of Citizen and Thefft, two of the label's production mavens.
The Thefft hook-up, "Fish Tank," goes for a subtle approach, placing percussion and beats into the near background and providing a framework for Redway's rich, jazzy tones. Until now Citizen has dealt chiefly in vocal samples, but he takes full advantage of working with a sentient being on "We Turn." It's a lovely bit of unfussy deep house that grabs at the heart, punctuated by surges of billowing keys, compacted percussion and, aided by Redway's smoochy vocals, giving off an erotic scent.
