Mouse On Mars - Spezmodia

  • Jan St. Werner and Andi Toma mark 20 years of doing what the fuck they like with a breathless EP that serves as a twisted love letter to the restorative powers of hard-hitting dance music. "Bakerman Is Breaking Bad" is every bit as astonishing as its titular TV show, an irresistible flurry of pogoing beats, dribbling happy hardcore tropes and squelching acid. Despite clocking in at 145 BPM, "Cream Theme" is tame in comparison, but with its tommy gun rhythm and frantic chimes it sounds like the theme to some amphetamine-fuelled Chinese dragon dance. "Spezmodia" is wonderful, a kaleidoscopic mash-up of glitch, nose-bleed gabber and swirling synths. "Migmy" indulges in a spot of booty bass revivalism, before the fuzzy hardcore keys and punchy rave stabs of "I See Dizzy" bring the whole 20-minute joyride to a memorable finale.
