Hector - Haunted EP

  • Tsuba's year commences with Hector's third EP for the label. A pair of two new tracks from the Mexican-born Londoner reside with a remix of "Hide," an A-side track Tsuba released in the summer of 2012. All three display a style that distils the groove down to its most elemental, but lose none of their dance floor impact despite austere and linear arrangements. "Haunted" has a six-note Latin motif at the track's core, with booming kicks and rough-hewn hats lending a vibrant edge to the mix. Only a bassline and barely-there claps really invade their space, pockmarked by the occasional splash of FX and a single repeating note, but the result is infectious and hypnotic. "Stomp" also dispenses of superfluous details, its rumbling, smothered bassline joined by a restrained acid squelch and staccato snares. Windblown chimes echo and fade, giving the otherwise driving, percussive workout a celestial air. Delano Smith's solid remix of "Hide" pushes the distinctive lead and watery notes away from the foreground, while supple bongos and pads surround a two-note phrase that gradually dissolves into space.
