Jordan & Point Break - The Split

  • Point Break ran a short-lived New York party called Tar & Feathered, where unlikely acts were paired together for a night—usually one techno, one house. That ethos bleeds into Arthur Kimskii and Cory James' L.A.G. label, which they started in 2013. Last spring's Sidewalks saw them in wiggly techno mode, but on their second release (a hook-up with Jordan Poling), they dig into the depths with narcotic house that'd tickle Fred P's fancy. Jordan starts things with "Together," which pairs a wonky melody with precise percussion and a sliver of a drum break that glints like sharpening knives. It'd be funereal if it weren't for the mechanical spring in its step, but his "Solitude" is even more mournful, waddling along on deflated chords and listless drums. Point Break take the other side, and their tracks are only marginally more upbeat. "Eating Alone" is just as ruminative, with soft drums and blurred vocal samples, while "Hippie" is all sandpaper textures and a curiously misplaced arpeggio. All four tunes brush up against the East Coast deep house that's defined by languorous tempos and druggy atmospherics.
