John Daly - Solar Sailing

  • Lately John Daly has been making deep house sound mystical, whether we're talking outer space exploration or the subtropical atmospheres of last year's The Smoke Clears LP. For his first release of 2014, which comes on One Track, the Irishman drives his cosmic car to Detroit and combines the subaquatic with the astral (if the title "Solar Sailing" wasn't enough of a hint). The "Full Tide" mix is all about the liquid synths, which sit on a gentle foundation of characteristically soft drums and a bassline that could've been ripped right out of a prime era Model 500 record. Warm and inviting like techno comfort food, the track motors on for eight minutes without much interruption—it's pure contentment. The shorter "Deep Mix" isn't dramatically different, but it feels more spacious, kicking it up to a less languorous pace. The EP is rounded off by the "Rhythm Section" mix, which is exactly what it promises. Even just the drums and bassline of "Solar Sailing" make for a pretty good tune. Like so much of Daly's work, it's not going to melt your face, but there's something pleasing about such consistency.
