Brioski - Late Night EP

  • Brooklyn label Throne Of Blood haven't quite gained widespread recognition, but if there's any justice then their recent torrent of high-quality releases will mean a breakthrough is just around the corner. With Late Night, Milan's Claudio Brioschi joins the likes of Daniel Avery, Bicep and Chloe in the imprint's discography. The EP's pleasingly low-slung, druggy aesthetic slots in neatly with much of the label's recent output. Gently propulsive basslines drive everything here, and the release becomes more meditative and fuggy with each new track. "All Night Long" stretches out in cat-like fashion, with thrumming bass and fist-pumping claps soaring and descending while a vocal loop repeats the title. "Hey Gringo" is a slo-mo punk-funk groover with spacey vocals that whir along for seven minutes. It feels like a low-key number by Throne Of Blood co-founders The Rapture. "Let Me Hit" bubbles along in similar fashion to the opener. A looping bassline duels with swirling synths and a garbled voice that's more like an extra bassline than a vocal. "Rough Sailor" closes the release in a half-awake narcotic state, claps and the odd spiralling synth slowly succumbing to a gently tugging undertow of bass.
