Todd Terje - Spiral

  • Originally known for his remixes and 2004's now-classic "Eurodans," Todd Terje saw everything change with the 2011 release of Ragysh. Anchored by the hypnotic Italo-swing of "Snooze 4 Love," the EP unveiled a sugar-rush take on the cheese-leaning dance anthem. Terje has only strengthened his resume in the interim. First there was the delightfully funky space-disco strut of "Inspector Norse," and then this year came both "Strandbar" and "Lanzarote," a collaboration with fellow Norwegian beardo Lindstrøm. With his debut album set to drop this spring, Terje's unleashing Spiral. Containing two tracks that apparently won't be included on the LP, Spiral is over 20 minutes of giddy Italo anthems. The title cut opens with tumbling drums and the kind of swift Day-Glo arpeggio Terje has come to trademark. But just as you begin to float on this daze-inducing synth, he drifts away on wistful, almost melancholic guitar and distant synthetic moans. Terje has playfully described "Q" as "trance-not-trance" (although this could be applied to virtually everything he's been involved with of late). Atop another horizon-wide arpeggio, Terje layers bursts of strobey house chords, and the effect is almost stiflingly humid. Across its 12-minutes, he continues to stitch little synthesizer patterns and melodies within the arpeggio, keeping the track lithe and allowing it to subtly evolve. It's another earworm from a producer who has become seemingly ubiquitous through crafting them.
