Various - StudioR002

  • The second record from Berlin's Studio R°, an offshoot of the Studio R° internet TV station, is another four-track compilation. Its press sheet points out a "focus more on known talent" this time, which could partly explain why it's not as fresh or exciting as 001. Soulphiction's "Temptations" is a pleasantly jazzy little strut, but it hardly goes anywhere, and if it's designed for DJs, the arrival of a new vocal sample in the last minute or so feels like an awkward move. "Studio r°" from Daniel Stefanik is a bit more interesting—it's funky and almost frantic, with quick-firing synths and cymbals keenly deployed across a couple of climactic sequences. The flip is the record's better half, where tempos are dialed down and the mood turns nocturnal. Freund der Familie offer up the slowest thing here (roughly 112 BPM) in "Kantine," a back-to-basics dubby techno cut whose rolling chords and thick-slicing hi-hats should hit the spot for DJs playing to subdued, early-morning dance floors. Doyeq get a little more brisk with "Night Park," an intriguing effort featuring a spacious, synth-heavy atmosphere, one occasionally permeated with echo-laden murmurs, along with an acidic bassline swaggering down low.
