Tuff City Kids - Roby Tease EP

  • Gerd Janson and Phillip Lauer have been producing remixes as Tuff City Kids for the past five years. It was only in 2012, though, that they made the jump to releasing original productions. The single EP they've put to wax, through Ostgut Ton sublabel Unterton, contained "Beggar," one of that year's biggest house bombs. Their second EP comes via Delsin, and is aimed squarely at the peak-time slot, offering up four muscular house cuts. "HFS" gets things underway with big stabs and a hazy midrange. It's fast-paced and dynamic, with a series of well-placed breakdowns, and steadily builds momentum for its duration. The two versions of "Wendy" uphold the brisk pace set by the opener, though the grittier "Girlfriend 44 PiaNO Mix" is the pick of the two, its devastating highs and bass squelch combining for the EP's highlight. "Reeze" further cements Janson and Lauer's knack for crafting throwback drum tracks but, despite the obvious quality on show, it won't get the airtime of its counterparts.
