Various - Throne Of Black Catalogue EP 1

  • New York's Throne Of Blood label has had another banner year in 2013, letting loose a steady stream of great EPs by the likes of Hardway Bros, Chloe and Bohemian Groove. This release is a collaboration with Detroit's like-minded Black Catalogue, and features tracks by that label's Monty Luke and Carter Brothers. The theme is the end of summer, and of the EP's four takes on that dark, autumnal mood, it's "The Doctor Is Out" by NYC's Pixelife that jumps out the most. A bassy acid slow-burner, it's covered with interweaving synth lines that explode together in the track's final stretch. Pixelife also contributes "5 Month Survey," a slightly less ominous, ten-minute offering built on clean, clattering drums and R&S-heyday acid lines that swell pleasingly into a euphoric peak. Elsewhere, Black Catalogue label boss Monty Luke's "Behavior Detection" pits warehouse percussion against a high, bubbling synth riff and rumbling bass pads, while Aussie duo Carter Brothers go for a dubbier but still acidic mood on their "Jamaica Burning (Version 2)."
