  • Like many of his countrymen, Romanian producer Funk E has been lurking in minimal's shadows for a few years now. His home country's house scene has long been dominated by Rhadoo, Raresh, Petre Inspirescu and their many collaborators, with breakthroughs from outside the trio's a:rpi:ar ranks a rare occurrence. The next one, though, might be Funk E. The past 18 months have seen the Bucharest resident put a flurry of tracks to wax for labels like Raum...musik, Desolat and Adult Only, each of them understated and effective DJ tools. His newest, "State Of Gravity," drops as part of a split 12-inch from The Double R. Clocking in at ten minutes, it's loopy and expansive (like most of his work), and has all the Funk E hallmarks—snappy, shuffling percussion, a melodic low-end and breakdowns that seem to occur at random. France's Vadim Svoboda takes the flip with "Pattern 8," a cut that's a bit more linear than its counterpart. It's also loopy but has a more straightforward groove that's helped along by a collage of samples in the mids and highs. While it's unlikely either of these will be the track people are talking about at the end of a night, you can rest assured that, no matter which side you put the needle on, it won't lose you any dancers.
