Matthew Styles - Out All Night

  • Matthew Styles has successfully plunged himself into the heart of European house music since his move to Berlin six years ago, releasing EPs on Ostgut Ton, BPitch Control and Running Back. This is his first offering on Derrick Carter and Luke Solomon's Classic, and it speaks of hard hours spent in clubs and studios. A subtle and nuanced trio of deep house cuts in the early '90s tradition of DJ Pierre and the like, Out All Night's standout for me is its last track, "Vacuum." It pits a coiled-spring synth riff against insistent snares and pads to yield a slow-building treat. Elsewhere, "Dominion" rests on a popping, clicking percussion loop, a loping bassline and regal strings, while "Freestanding" heaves its way forward in controlled fashion, its steady drums and claps infiltrated gradually by a lilting synth line.
