Black Orange Juice - 3 Started Alone

  • Ossie's 2012 EP Supercali saw the former Hyperdub producer turn to straight-up house, with some vocalists called in for help. It smacked of growing pains, and his productions lacked the pizzazz to match those singers, who called themselves Black Orange Juice. Ossie has now officially joined forces with them, signed to True Panther and turned in an EP with his most accomplished production work yet. Both Tilz and Paul Black have soulful and capable voices, and they're less earnest here than on Supercali. "Started In Paris" best signals the change. With its florid string swells and gently bouncing beat, it's a far cry from both of Ossie's past modes—UK funky and deep house—and their voices feel comfortable in the relaxed setting. "Alone" is even more subdued, with a melancholic vocal to match and careful synths that expand without toppling the delicate structure around them. "I Don't Know" essentially mashes the two songs together, decorating a barely-there beat with ornamental strings. Joe Goddard, a master of this gently poppy vocal house style, remixes the last track and throws a disco rhythm underneath it, making it more ready for the floor, but also losing some of the group's personality—a testament to the strength of their original work.
