Dax J - Dax J EP

  • Dax J might not have the cachet of some of UK techno peers, but if he's going to have a coming-out party, this EP is it. It's the first release on DJ Deep's recently re-launched Deeply Rooted label, and there aren't many tracks better suited for making the transition from the old label to the new than "D1." It's got an athletic stride that almost makes it house, but its sputters and sleek chords are pure techno—peaktime business with few moments at anything less than full throttle. Highlight "Something In The Woods" is as creepy as its title, driven by a demented wheeze that sounds lifted out of a horror movie. "Angel Dust" taps into the hardcore territory favoured by artists like Tessela, but instead of uprooting the track, the creaky Amen snippets ride along like faint memories of some other record. With these elements firmly under the thumb of the straight 4/4 beat, you could clock it as either clever or underwhelming. The EP wraps up with "Stolen Glory," a smooth workout with a palpitating chord. Like most of the EP, it might not expand your mind, but it's done with such an attractive swagger that it's hard not to look at Dax J in a whole new light.
