Ted Alexander - XXX

  • Stem Records' third release enlists London producer Ted Alexander, fresh from his solid work on Mood Music and Life & Death. Opener "XXX" initially trades on shimmering pads and repeating, paired-up vocals. The track shifts gradually as it progresses, the two-chord motif remaining throughout in disparate forms, while scattered hits provide momentum. Ultrasone's remix is a busy, percussive joint, shedding the central melody and dismantling the vocals around a murmuring bassline, chiming piano and subtle synths. "Love Walls"'s dense structure reveals sonic complexity—rumbling vocals, glowing subs, rasping strokes and intertwined low-end notes all reside in sonorous harmony, and the effect is one of slow immersion. Phillip Priebe's remix pares back the textures into an almost dreamy cut that pulls snatches of the vocal and analogue bass within a floating form; bell-like notes and pads lend to its otherworldly feel.
