DJ Q - Q Bass Trax 1

  • For whatever reason, bassline has always been below the radar. A close cousin of grime and UK funky, over the years its rambunctious aesthetic has gone somewhat unnoticed outside of its core constituents. DJ Q is one of bassline's most recognizable names, and the most prominent producer to stick with the genre. Now with his own label, Q Bass Trax, he presents a sound somewhere between garage and bassline. Appropriately titled "Big," the A-side stays close to his roots. A collage of oddly placed samples spins around and filters itself to death, stretched thin like a veneer over one of his signature wobbly basslines. "Come With Me" stitches together warm disco samples with feverish diva shrieks. It's all quite pleasant until the LFO bassline comes in and tramples over everything. It's a pleasing drop, but you can't help wondering what it would sound like if Q worked in the bassline elements without merely shoving incompatible passages together.
