Robert Dietz - Common EP

  • One thing's for sure: Robert Dietz gives value for money. Buy the Frankfurt producer's entire Common EP and it adds up to a few seconds shy of 30 minutes. His return to Gerd Janson's Running Back leads off with "Common," which features on Loco Dice's recent mix for Defected. Spattered with flecks of disco and piano, it certainly fits the Defected aesthetic, but there's an underlying languid mood. "Nostaljack" picks up its feet in comparison. It throws in a few ravey signifiers for good measure, and swings along to some punchy carnival drums. Dietz strips everything right back on "Interrude," a fairly linear drum workout that spins around a choppy, delayed loop and razor sharp hi-hats, before "Doul"—a groaning slab of ambient house—brings the tempo right down. On "Riddim," Dietz uses an old reggae trick of breaking a track down to its, well, rhythm. It's essentially "Common" with the melodies removed, replaced by a deliciously wonky synth line and augmented by even fatter kicks. In the midst of a forward-thinking EP, it may just be the most memorable offering here.
