Various - A Summer Riot (Part II)

  • Futureboogie bring together four acts of varying experience on their second annual summertime-themed release. A Summer Riot (Part II) focuses on disco-leaning house. Thrilogy is Deep Groove's Lee Pattison, who whips soulful piano, a jerky gospel vocal and handclaps towards a frenzied breakdown on "Bound By Enchantment." Until its rubbery bassline drops, there's a hint of FCL's "It's You" about its bass-less ways. The heaviest hitters on the EP, We Love Space residents PBR Streetgang, embark on a love affair with Crazy Penis's Danielle Moore on "C With No Name." It may not be the most taxing of commissions for Moore, a hugely gifted singer, but its chugging groove, relentless airhorns and broody bass add up to the EP's highlight. Lukas's "Rock Right" is no slouch either. The Bristol producer—the sole remnant of last year's A Summer Riot—channels clanking percussion, a smidge of hip-hop vocals and quaking bass on a raw-edged head-nodder. Meanwhile, James Welsh's slow-burning career in electronic music looks to be now firmly on track. Following his Craven EP for Futureboogie earlier this year, "Jungle Canyon Rope Bridges" puts a twist on soulful, squelching deep house signifiers.
