Andre Lodemann - Imagine

  • German producer Andre Lodemann has a way of lacing even the most sober deep house with suspense and anxiety. It's one of the reasons why he's become a bit of an unsung hero—it's easy to forget just how singular he is. After last year's wonderful Fragments compilation, he debuts on Hamburg's Dessous and lets his saccharine side take over. That's not always a bad thing—"Your Choice," which was released on Room With A View in 2011, showed that Lodemann could do breezy just fine. But something about these two tracks feels off, and particularly cringeworthy vocal samples don't help matters. "Imagine" immediately brings to mind glamorous outdoor terraces with its propulsive drums and insistent synths, but a pseudo-operatic vocal drowns whatever subtlety it might have had. "Eyes Wide Open" has the killer trademark Lodemann vamping, but again, an unnecessary vocal sample pulls it towards the Buddha Bar end of things. Bronx producer Alix Alvarez gives "Eyes Wide Open" a swift kick in the ass, gussying it up for the club and putting the vocal way in the back, but in the process loses some of the Lodemann magic.
