Ksoul & Muteoscillator - Soul Hell

  • This Italian duo have a history of rough-around-the-edges house, whether it's Ksoul collaborating with Morphosis on Morphine, or the two releasing on M>O>S. Their raw outlook means they fit perfectly on Dekmantel's roster. Soul Hell is crunchy and lo-fi, but just friendly enough not to scare away deep house fans. The title track's bassline is an overdriven blob (albeit a catchy one) with drums that are basically bursts of static, but then a jazzy electric piano dances its way in and raises the vibe to something Moodymann might play. Based on the same blueprint, "Stinger" hangs easy on a simple organ riff but dresses up its caked-on grit with more keys. "Detrance" sounds like it's running at different speeds: a dusty string loop rubs against slow-motion basslines, while the drums pitter-patter on the surface like they're trying to find the right entry point.
