Ejeca / Citizen - Rosario / U Give Me Love

  • There's nothing unpalatable on this meeting between two leading lights of the classic house revival, although you're left wondering what might have been if Ejeca and Citizen had collaborated instead of working separately on Loft's debut release. Ejeca delivers a crisp cut with "Rosario," highlighted by grandstanding Italo pianos, girly yelps and a recurring synth flourish with more than a hint of prog trance about it. Mic Newman's remix dispenses with much of the embellishment in favor of a low-slung, analogue throb laid on top of a serene, single-note foundation and spurts of scratchy percussion. "U Give Me Love" finds Citizen in somewhat contemplative mood, the London producer settling into a mid-paced groove with woozy pads and muffled bass. Nicholas, who turns in a remix of the track, was developing a sound based on early '90s house well before it became de rigeur. There's a satisfying crunch to the snares on his fine version, though its primary feature is a stabbing synth loop that deserves the finest of soundsystems to do it justice.
