Various - The Underground Sound of Glasgow Mix Sampler

  • This five-track sampler for JD Twitch's recent Optimo: The Underground Sound of Glasgow mix kicks off with the beautiful and simple "I Remember" by Lord Of The Isles, which lays intermittent flashes of synth over shimmering piano. With a heartbreaking duration of just one minute and 43 seconds, you wish it was ten times longer. Twitch's "Optimo" mix of Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat's "Glasgow Jubilee" is a filthy confection, with lewd bass nibs framing Moffat's equally salacious spoken-word descriptions of grimy sexual encounters. The marimba-soaked "La Samaria"—the second track from Auntie Flo's acclaimed debut LP—is well-known by now, while the "Optimo (Espacio) Mix" of Factory Floor's "Real Love" starts like something by Bobby Orlando and ends like something by Bobby Orlando featuring Nitzer Ebb. Golden Teacher's "Love Rocket," meanwhile, expertly melds yelping Alan Vega-ish vocals with rough-edged analogue synths. As with the excellent mix, there's no weak link here.
