Die & Addison Groove - Keyhole / HydroPump

  • DJ Die's Gutterfunk label has been bringing breakbeats back into the bustling fray of UK dance music—it's not quite jungle, it's certainly not drum & bass and it sure ain't dubstep. It seems only natural that he would team up with Addison Groove, another of Bristol's foremost uptempo producers. The pair sound unsurprisingly comfortable together. "Hydro Pump" is the kind of collaboration where it's hard to isolate who did what exactly, although the track's flamboyant vocals are a dead ringer for Addison Groove's Dance Mania-inspired tracks. The two producers work seamlessly together here, and "Hydro Pump," replete with exaggerated horn stabs and Die's rubbery bounce, feels nicely streamlined. "Keyhole" sounds more like Addison's baby, its halting stagger and demented demeanor like an outtake from Transistor Rhythm spiced up with Die's deft percussion. It's not quite as peppy as the flipside, but it's more about the tension it creates.
