J Diesel - Strange Days EP

  • J Diesel has a background in hip-hop, as you can tell from his extremely bassy kicks. Hip-hop producers often turn the filter resonance right up and the cutoff right down, creating low-end presence from very pure, powerful sine waves. Following with the same approach, Strange Days is an EP of dark, twisted house that finds its natural place in the confusing hours of the morning. "English Please" achieves this with lolloping foundations and gloopy sounds. Clips of vocals and liquid fill the spaces, and there's a passage of odd spoken word over the breakdown. Made from the same raw material but a few BPM higher, "Ol Dirty" is tougher with a sense of propulsive funk, the rhythm rebounding off the kicks onto the offbeat. Silky's remix of "Ol Dirty" has hard-edged layers of blacklight synth—shards of sound that fly around the stereo field. He creates disorientation this time through misalignment: the kick stutters out of time, the synth stabs don't adhere to the drums, and everything comes and goes haphazardly.
