Ejeca - Different Rules

  • Like much of Garry McCartney's output as Ejeca, "Different Rules," which leads out this debut release for London promoters Lokee, isn't overly intricate. Rather it just hits a groove and runs with it. It's chunky, Jersey-style deep house, with a warbling organ that later gives way to some spanking old school pianos and skipping hi-hats. "Akrobat" adopts a subtler stance, using brief slithers of jarring vocals like a form of percussion. It threatens to turn into Nightcrawlers-style retro garage at several points, but instead settles into a moody, creeping house vibe. The Ekkohaus remix of "Different Rules" sees the Greek producer riff on the original's piano stabs, pulling them apart, covering them in muck and plugging them back in. Eric Volta's take on "Akrobat" slowly increases in intensity, built on a menacing bass synth hum and muted, clipped snares.
