XDB - Frocks

  • Share
  • For his second release as XDB on Sistrum Recordings, Kosta Athanassiadis builds tension from an indecipherable hiss and torrid coils of synthesizers. Structurally speaking, "Frocks" is as straightforward as the titular piece of clothing, with XDB's usual dance floor functionality. Yet it somersaults with energy like a slower Planetary Assault Systems, with field recordings of chirping birds adding an organic touch. "Modula" shrieks where "Frocks" bellows, although it stagnates far too early. Tight hi-hats keep the production punchy, and a mellow piano breakdown revives the thump, but otherwise it's the odd man out on the release, danceable but forgettable. Sistrum Recordings boss Patrice Scott contributes his own remix of "Frocks," ironing it out while a segmented bassline and resonant thwacks constrict the original's euphoria. His remix is mellow and starry-eyed, but with the sense of dance floor efficiency we've come to expect from him.
