Detroit Swindle - The Passion EP

  • The past 12 months has seen Detroit Swindle strong-arm their way into many a set with their chunky deep house style. But their charms often take a few plays to register—a case in point being these two productions for Tsuba. An answer, perhaps, lies in their preference to jump right in: rather than three-minute builds, they cut to the groove early and you hang on. It may not be tantalising, but you go back for more. "Sometimes" is free of excess fat, with a muscular frame of three-note bass prods, walloping handclaps and garagey hi-hats. The tiniest slither of female vocal injects the requisite amount of soul. "That Freak Stuff" is much grittier. As an elastic bassline bungees up and down its length, it's peppered with galloping cowbells and dabs of piano. The Soulphiction remix is more expansive, rolling out jazzy electric piano on top and encasing it in an even more rubbery groove.
