Lamar - Guilty Pleasures

  • As Todd Burns found out when he interviewed Keith Worthy two-and-a-half years ago, the Detroit DJ had clear reasons for making his transition to production after nearly two decades behind the decks. Worthy continues to make records in the way he arrived at that decision: by instinct. Still blurring the line between deep house and techno, his latest release on Aesthetic Audio is typical Keith Worthy, despite the name change. "Guilty Pleasures" is a feast of helicoptering beats, fragile pads and bass so heavy it seems to groan under its own weight. Towards the end of its ten minutes—of which Worthy doesn't waste a second—it begins to unravel completely, becomingly increasingly discordant in tone. A shade lighter, "Karma" is pitched-up deep house, fusing squeaking arps with subtle, glossy synth work and rattling hi-hats. He's far too modest to agree, but Keith Worthy sounds like he's got the hang of this production lark.
