Matrixxman & Mykki Blanco - God Created The Beat

  • NYC rapper Mykki Blanco has built a lot of hype with his fierce verses. But his spot on Matrixxman's debut single casts him instead as a flamboyant deep house talking head. It turns out to be a strong look for him. Over a fidgety Night Slugs-style beat from the San Francisco producer, Blanco's quasi-religious overtones turn goofy as he vamps "mind you, is that a snake I see in that grass? Mind you, is that a snake I see in your pants?" The original is all slam and thrust, doubling up on orchestral hits and snares that sound like a battering ram. Though it feels big and obnoxious, there's a deceptive amount of breathing room. The slightly more housey "Groove Mix" tries to fill the space with some generic sounding organ and strutting hi-hats. While these are a nice touch, Blanco remains the star attraction, overshadowing the perfunctory backing track. JD Twitch offers up an "Apocalyptic Mix" that blends his own warring allegiances between techno and house, dropping anvils on grand pianos over a rigid drum track. It's Physical Therapy who comes out looking best, though, with a striking rework that lets all the air out until "God Created The Beat" is discombobulated and vaporous, eventually re-collecting itself with a grace that's absent from the other versions.
