Ils - Y4K

  • Not much needs to be said about the Y4K series. It continues to release the highest in quality breakbeat mixes from a multitude of DJ’s and Producers. From the first in the series by Tayo (which followed Hyper’s Y3k mixes) to the latest installment from Tayo yet again, the series now progresses with an interesting collection from Ils. The mix begins with the deep rolling sounds of ‘Fight Alone’ by Ed209. The mix maintains a pretty good pace early, as shown by the bouncy baselines and early 90’s synths of ‘Ardcore’ by Blowfelt. Ils provides a baseline driven remix of that man Roni Size and Reprazent and their single ‘Lucky Pressure’. The brilliant ‘Hip Hop Phenomenon’ by Tsunami One and BT makes a welcome appearance as does the hit single by Ils himself, ‘6 Space’, which features some smooth atmospheric effects that float around a swirling baseline. The mix really features some deep droning baselines around this section, a fact further emphasized by the deep and dirty ‘Can’t Copy’ by Dynamite MC. Pixie provide a vocal highlight with the moody ‘It Don’t Come Easy’ while ‘Passion’ by Rkidz & Noize is a real highlight of the mix with its quirky bleeps and sinister vocal samples. The mix closes out in style with the eerie Christian J remix of Chris Coco’s ‘Albatross’. Not a bad addition to the series. It features many productions that will be familiar to those in the know, all mixed and compiled pretty well. Perhaps not the greatest mix in the series, but one definitely worth checking out.
