Randomer - RNDMR01

  • The white label seems like the perfect format for Randomer's music. From the deranged swing of his 2011 output (see "Brunk," his contribution to Hessle Audio's 116 & Rising compilation) to the rolling breakbeat techno of recent times, Rohan Walder's productions have always been functional in the extreme. In line with many of his Hessle Audio and Hemlock peers, he expertly deploys the bare minimum of elements to wipe out a floor—but even by their standards his approach is pleasingly no-nonsense. These four tracks are his rawest to date. "House Banger" is just that, a chunky house number whose bombastic snares and jittery rave pads nod to mid-'80s Chicago and early '90s London respectively. It's rare for Walder's music to sound so willfully vintage—the mix is roughed up, as if ancient 8-bit samplers were involved—but his handling of the source material is decidedly irreverent. "Meat And Dancing" falls more in line with today's boisterous UK techno, its farty bassline and looped vocal inviting comparisons to Blawan. "Search It Out" explores similar terrain but in a more singular fashion, its dense arrangement executed with the in-yer-face directness of the finest UK hardcore. Finally, "Need U"'s agile breakbeats, married with gaseous pads and stuttered diva vocals at the opening, take on an ethereal jungle flavour.
