Various - No Shade

  • Barely three months since the release of his Animal Social Club LP, Jerome Sydenham and Ibadan Records return, with the Berlin-based veteran this time tag-teaming alongside two collaborators. After meeting at former NYC hotspot Nell's when she was 16, Sylvie Forêt and Sydenham crossed paths years later in Berlin, where Forêt DJs regularly. On "No Shade" and "1000 Knives" they work together for the first time. The title track locks down a typically muscular groove, with kick and bass working in airtight unison beneath choppy chants and a single, strident note. "1000 Knives" feels more adventurous, throwing infectious '90s synth lines over a throbbing frame in a NY tech-house style. On "Persephone," Sydenham links up with Aschka and launches a similar attempt at the jugular, fusing two-pronged stabs, galloping drums and guttural synths. It's solid, but unremarkable. "R-Number" is smoother and a touch more cohesive but still doesn't quite jump off the page.
