Alex Coulton - Too Much Talk

  • In their own words, the collectively-run South London label 92 Points set out to "join the dots between the rapturous heights of 1992 golden-era jungle, turn of the century champagne-bubbly garage and modern day mongrel forms." So far they've stuck to their mandate, and have brought together an assortment of sonic textures from as far afield as Puerto Rico and Russia. For their fourth release they look to Alex Coulton, a Mancunian producer who made significant ripples last year with outings on Idle Hands and Hypercolour subsidiary, Hype LTD. Embracing the imprint's freeform ethos, Coulton veers away from his usual four-to-the-floor template, leading with a rallying intro of tin-can percussion and well-rounded kicks. A bullish bassline acts as glue for the scattered framework, forming a heavyweight compound that's focussed intently on the peak-time floor. Keeping to the rhythmic pulse of the original, Tessela transforms Coulton's crisp chassis into an explosive mass of jungle breaks and gunshot kicks, shrewdly adding a synth part that brings a spot of emotion to the track's violent core. Sheffield producer Beneath tranquillizes Coulton's bassline to give his interpretation a drunken gait, offering up the busiest, if also the most subdued, of the three cuts on this impressively rich UK-centric package.
