Skudge / Different World - Lost Archives I

  • Lost Archives sees Amsterdam's Indigo Aera label hoover up neglected productions from friends and affiliates for a series of limited-run two-trackers. Skudge's "Möbius" is, as always, inimitably Skudge: there's something in the sound palette, seamless pacing and athleticism of the groove that could come from no one else. It's a commanding opener, its thick pads gradually gaining breadth and force as they climb into the foreground. The duo achieve maximum impact with minimum materials, and the whole thing exudes a sense of purposeful optimism. By contrast, Different World's contribution is a relatively maximalist affair. A collaboration between Detroit veteran Claude Young and Japan's Takasi Nakajima, "Think Twice" has been floating around for a while: it was released in 2011 to support the relief effort following the earthquake in Japan, and was included on Marcel Fengler's Berghain mix that same year. The formula here is essentially timeless, following the thoughtful, aqueous take on the Detroit template that Young has been exploring for years. This is soul music for dance floor reveries, its dense layers of pads and silken piano chords making for a dreamier counterpart to "Rapture," released around the same time on ART.
