FCL - It's You (San Soda's Panorama Bar Acca Version)

  • With copies changing hands on Discogs for silly money and one DJ (alright, it was Jackmaster) pleading on Twitter for someone to provide him with a rip (and receiving the opprobrium of the track's producers for doing so), "It's You" has become a runaway train since its release on FCL's own We Play House label late last summer. Which is odd when you consider that over its six minutes, "It's You"—a reimagining of a 1986 ESP single—is merely a female vocal accompanied by percussion so sparse that a synth melody would drown it. Handclaps, a smidge of bass, the merest whisper of hi-hat… that's all it is. Hardly a recipe for anthem status, is it? Yet Solomun had the chutzpah to drop it in front of several thousand people in Amsterdam at midnight during his New Year's Eve gig. With the vinyl-only original previously for sale in limited numbers at FCL's webshop and a Ghent record store, Defected have snapped up "It's You" for a digital release. Even this has caused a stir, provoking the Belgian production duo into the extraordinary step of justifying their decision to license it. Is the track a comment on the lack of subtlety in modern house music? No, more likely just an acapella that's freakishly developed a life of its own.
