Baaz - What About Talk About #2

  • Baaz's EP of classic deep house last year for Slices of Life was such an exemplar of its genre that it was as if Bastian Völker was adhering to some dance music equivalent of the Reinheitsgebot, the laws that govern the purity of German beer. The first two tracks on this EP for Völker's own label, Office, don't veer too wildly from that agenda. "Owl's Night" is permeated by gooey pads, hi-hats that crackle like broken ice and mid-tempo 909 beats, with cockroach-like percussion scuttling across it. Baaz makes a grab for the heartstrings on "Those Things," where a twinkling, muffled piano loop phases between left and right speakers and a descending bassline twirls underneath. Soulphiction's remix of Baaz & Iron Curtis's "K.M.S." changes things up. More glitchy, downtempo house than classically deep, Michel Baumann builds up layers of congas, wheezy synths and mournful pitch bends, paving the way for the melancholia of Baaz's final track, "Whataboutalkabout," a near-beatless mood piece penetrated by doleful Rhodes piano and lazy, prodding bass.
