Various - Let the Fantasy Be Heard

  • Slovenia's Danza Macabra, helmed by the namesake production duo of Edin Cuturic and Martin Rojnik, has been quietly building a reputation over the last two years away from more obvious Eastern European electronic music hotspots. With recent split EPs lining up Echonomist, Rills, Matthias Vogt and Axel Bartsch, the New Year brings further collective efforts. The four tracks from the Let Fantasy Be Heard EP may lack a core theme, but they showcase the label's broad palette and musical ambition. The EP opens with its standout, Larsson's "Late Night Fantasy," an eight-minute trip through acid-flecked dance floors that stretches its percussion tautly and spreads its melody in layers, with low-end stabs, rasping leads and piano chords. Rico Puestel's "They Rang, They Rang, And I Parsed The Ceiling" features piano too, but the chords are chopped up and spread out; the track begins nervously, but halfway takes on an ethereal, glockenspiel-drenched groove. Danza Macabra appear with "Chaos Rains," a lean and moody tech house track that opens without beats, and echoes with gritty basslines and bright leads, daubing on murmured vox and FX to an atmosphere at the edge of menacing. Closing out is Owen Howells' "The Door." It's a dubby effort that works with heavy, reversed sonics and a looped chord pattern, quickening the pulse through bell hits, mumbled words and subtle manipulation of its elements that weave a hypnotic spell.
