Michael Mayer - Mantasy Remixe 1

  • Bringing Michael Mayer's jaunty sophomore album back into the spotlight, Kompakt start 2013 with the first of three remix EPs. Forming the A-side, Mantasy standout "Voigt Kampff Test" goes under the knife twice courtesy of Cómeme's Philip Gorbachev, and Magazine co-founder Daniel Ansorge under his Barnt alias. Gorbachev's version breaks up the percussion to form an initially stilted, yet increasingly fluid, drum grid, before climaxing via a scaling siren. There's little to link the Russian's mix to the original, but Barnt's deeper, more spacious interpretation maintains Mayer's distinctive acid-flecked programming, while introducing a new assembly of plaintive chimes. Over on the flip, The Mole tackles the far more understated "Bauhaus." While staying true to the serenity of Mayer's beatless score, the usually more buoyant Canadian utilises a simple drum loop to lift the stems into eight minutes of tonal deep house. All in all, a decent club-purposed release that may appease those who found Mantasy a little on the twee side.
