Calibre - Renaissance

  • The first time you put on the latest EP from Calibre, on Zero T's proudly "multi-genre" Footprints label, you're likely not going to get what you expect. "Renaissance" is straight-up house. Carefully decorated with the same muted horn reveries that make up one of Dominick Martin's many sonic signatures, the sharp metal textures and uncluttered soundscape are almost exactly what you'd expect Calibre to sound like stretched over this type of template. Speeding things up a notch, "Reach" is the groovier of the two, with a shimmying bassline and vocal snippets to offset all the ribbons of pretty noise that stalk backwards through the track. The flipside "Plugs" offers the obligatory dip into drum & bass. Basslines rev up hesitantly from below, horns echo in solitude and chords reverberate dramatically. There's no element of surprise with this one. It's just a familiar Calibre tune, which even over his dizzying discography, is always a welcome thing.
