Hreno - Country to Country

  • Not the newest face on the block, but yet to fully establish himself within Berlin's house fraternity, Chris Hreno made the pilgrimage from Montreal to the German capital to join his old sparring partner Colin de la Plante, AKA The Mole. With a helping hand from his pal, the Canadian has since accumulated valuable production credits via a slew of collaborative remixes on international stables such as Turbo, Electronic Minds, Fur Trade and Haunt. Marking his first solo release, Hreno delivers a four track EP via the Rotterdam-based Sound Architecture imprint. "Completely New" sits somewhere between Fred P's East Coast soul and the understated shuffles of David Moufang, before "Shit Broke Up" adds further depth with a synth line that sounds curiously lifted from Springsteen's lamenting reflections in the late '80s. Overstretched by a good five minutes, the lengthy "Portage" is a somewhat featureless dub house cut, while a pointless 40-second soundscape completes the package. A touch run-of-the mill for the most part, but a promising enough debut.
