Cobblestone Jazz - Before This

  • Share
  • Back in June, all four members of the Berlin-based Modern Deep Quartet streamlined their respective solo commitments to dedicate a month's graft towards the Cobblestone Jazz project. Despite recording a stockpile of new material as a four-man ensemble, this two-tracker is the result of Danuel Tate on Fender Rhodes, Tyger Dhula on drums and Mathew Jonson on SH-101 bass, while Colin de la Plante, AKA The Mole, was beachside in Sardinia. Given the group's penchant for comfortably breaking the track time into double figures, the A-side weighs in at the comparatively meagre seven minutes. In trademark style the track is more of a jam, buoyantly weaving along to a samba groove, with the gradual introduction of shuffling hats, orchestrated bongos and a rolling bassline. The finished piece is by no means upfront yet not without its swagger; it actually bears a closer resemblance to jazzy UK garage than Berlin house. On the B-side, "Before That" represents a lower-slung and arguably superior rework of the title track that applies softer toning to a percussively sparser framework, with an extra three minutes added.
