Dax J / Chris Stanford / Gareth Wild - Revok EP

  • EarToGround's mission statement declares its intention "to make sure London will always be seen as a good source of quality new Techno." Appropriately, the label's fifth release features three tracks of steely, no-frills, heads-down action. It may come from London, but the grey-scale template championed by Berliners like Ben Klock and Marcel Dettmann holds sway over all three tracks' gritty machine rhythms and ominous atmospheres. Gareth Wild and Dax J's "Revok" rides along a dully throbbing groove, all murky mid-toms and sandpaper hats; a tightly toggled arpeggio gradually rises from the mist, answered by a low foghorn blast. While it's not necessarily going to send anyone scurrying to Shazam, it creates an adequate sense of drama. Chris Stanford and Dax J's "Syncronise" takes a similar tack, as a grinding rhythm gives way to a minor-key melody and sinister bass undulations. Finally, Ø [Phase] reworks "Revok" into a lighter, sleeker shape, buoyed by nimble clicks and cresting in a rich shimmer of drone. None of the three tracks is profoundly earthshaking, but any of them would make a fine addition to a long night of dark, linear techno.
