- Karaoke Kalk's Le Rok (Hannover's Christophe Döhne) keeps things sumptuous and subdued on deep house ballad "Lover & Friend." Rhodes chords punctuate the 16-bar progression like sighs; the cut-up jazz drums, cutting through a mist of ride cymbals, have bite, but they're never overpowering. The track's principal feature is a sample of a woman's voice, husky and dejected, edited into the phrase, "I never felt something like my best friend," but cut up and spread out across the song, broken apart like a wounded psyche. A remix from Berlin's Grinser smoothes it all out and dubs it down, replacing the vocal with spoken-word muttering and a sung refrain with the untutored feel of a DFA record. Chica Paula's remix is the most gripping version, with erratically ping-ponging delay effects and a glowing filament of resonant drone running through it; rich vocoder rounds out its air of lush, inviting strangeness.
