Vtothed - NYE Space Sessions Pt. 1

  • The bulk of WHITE's releases have tended to be classic-sounding deep house sprinkled with pixie dust, much in the vein of Smallville (and small wonder, given the two labels' tightly connected rosters). But they take a strikingly different tack on this release from Vtothed (Venedikt Reyf and David Gergós). The two already acknowledged their psychedelic tendencies with "We See Bonny Babes Trippin on Acid," released this past spring on Greta Cottage Workshop; here they go full-on outer space. "NYE Space Sessions Pt. 1" is a 14-minute live jam reminiscent of Move D and Benjamin Brunn's more esoteric work together; there's a hint of funk in the undulating sub bass, and intertwining drum patterns lend a flickering sense of groove, but most of the action is in meandering synthesizer passages that morph as unpredictably as summer clouds. House doesn't get much more horizontal. Edward's remix, a comparatively concise nine-and-a-half minutes long, adds a bumptious bassline and slightly more cutting drums, but otherwise it's just as suspicious of structure, preferring to zone out on endlessly modulating chords and spiraling leads. Emeralds fans, take note.
