Hypno - Kancourde

  • Hypno has shown a subtly unusual perspective on UK funky and house since he started releasing in 2010. It's been more than a minute since we heard from him, but here he re-emerges on RAMP Recordings with two more slices of minimalistic, jumpy house. "Kancourde" wrestles with the palette of what is basically microhouse, fashioning an almost cartoonishly taut jam with humourous synth noises that's not too far from Roska's early work. It would be slight were it not for the punishing blasts of subwoofer heat that ground it all. The juxtaposition between elements is enough to remind us of when the collision between house and dubstep was still a novel idea. "K2" trades in the microhouse for tribal house, as a sampled hand percussion breakbeat takes center stage over more fearsome bassweight. Like the flipside, it's simple and reduced yet ineffably effective—not about to blow anyone's minds but great fodder for beefing up an uptempo house set.
