Infected Mushroom - Converting Vegetarians

  • Israel's Infected Mushroom have built up a name for themselves in the doof doof world of psytrance and since 1996 they've been converting vegetarians to embrace their psychedelic, acid-induced rave sound. So what better name could they have selected for their latest album other than Converting Vegetarians? The first CD covers the trance side and it covers the bush doof sound with the tunes sitting around the 140+ bpm mark. It's a little weird to hear a trance album - a trance mix, yes - but an album? It's definitely an interesting experience. 303 squelches and wobbling basslines galore, add in a few tweaks and bleeps here and there, and it's perfect for those who can't seem to get enough of that rave environment, or those who simply like their music hard and banging. Funny thing is, the tracks themselves are around the same BPM level, so it would have made more of an impact to hear it as one mixed volume, rather than 11 separate tracks - in that way, creating a "journey" of sorts. The second CD, fittingly named The Other Side is a feast of electronica tracks, that I have not heard since Frontside released their debut album. From the downtempo, trip-hoppy title track featuring one of the Mushrooms on rap vocals and the sublime Drop Out, through to more uplifting tunes such as Elation Station and even collaborating with vocalist Michelle Adamson for Blink and b>Illuminaughty, The Other Side shows that Infected Mushroom have what it takes to make an electronica album as well as producing the psytrance they are famed for.
