Sultan – The Isabella EP

  • Born and bred in Montreal, Sultan gets very busy with a personal EP which takes on many different faces. ‘Night Visions’ was chosen by Luke Fair on the latest ‘In House We Trust 3’ and has also gone on to make it on the Global Underground Toronto by Deep Dish. Isabella This is melodic break beat with feeling. Hollow and sullen grooves on top of light, scattering percussion that paints many a picture. The layering of many different sounds, riffs and samples add to the journey in which this track takes you. The haunting female vocal is enough to make the knees wobble while the breakdown brings the floating effects into focus. This is a very original piece of production and the variety of sounds are polished, especially with a little guitar solo near the end. You can tell it comes from the cold. Night Visions Vocals by Stephanie Vezina as we see this deeply woven, lazy house number take off. The beat and basslines are tightly arranged and flow along easily as the moaning lyrics grind along closely. An acoustic guitar features throughout this track with soft, short, melodic bursts of bliss. Deep house with a twist of spice. Grumpy Gourmet Grumpy is probably a good word to use here, as this eccentric mix of moody basslines and dark percussion is what drives this minimal, building deep house track. What seems like improvised, swirling, piano samples, flutter over and over giving off a seamless layering of sounds though the haunting percussion is still very prominent. Night Visions dub The dub is very similar to the original as it takes the laziness of the track and shoves it in your face. A light scattering of the vocal in the breakdown aids the drop back into the beat and will surely please fans who prefer the pure deep groove untouched.
