A1 Bassline - Slur

  • Firmly ensconced in the heart of the Dirtybird family and with a release on Catz N Dog's increasingly essential Pets Recordings forthcoming, now's a good time to be A1 Bassline. Which probably explains why the Tighten Up co-founder has decided now is a good moment to launch a label of his own, Source Unknown. As an avowed drum & bass head in his early days, a nod to that dynamic duo Source Direct perhaps? Christian Sibthorpe certainly has the former's ears for sonic adventuring. "Slur" is a garage-influenced, skeletal house stomp with some gloriously inventive percussion. It begins with a warm synth drone to which Sibthorpe bolts on a thwacking, echoey, tom-tom. Rat-a-tat bass rises and falls, a snatch of distant female vocal wafts in and out and snares snap onto the groove like Lycra cycling pants. A decidedly grittier affair, "Slingback" growls along with an ocean-deep bass undertow, a quasi 2-step tempo and itchy, dubby drops.
